To put your WoodRat to work you need only a plunge router
and some bits. Unlike other router appliances, you
can use the router and bits you currently own. If
you are purchasing a router then we recommend
DeWalt
625 with
Plunge Bar A. This industry standard router has been manufactured
for 20 years and Plunge Bar A was specifically designed for it.
For joinery
operations
you need straight and dovetail bits.
Solid carbide up cut spirals with their continuous slicing
action are the best
choice
for
straight
bits. For a hand cut look, high speed steel dovetail
bits are your only choice. TCT dovetail bits have a stout
machine made look, but are required for man made
material. Our bits have extended shanks that
are best with WoodRat and our bit
sets are discounted 10% to 20%.
We offer other accessories that enhance and extend WoodRat's
capabilities. Our mounting
kit makes it easier to setup your machine and our precision
stop, brass
gauge bars, digital scale, dovetail
angle gauges and bristle brush makes
it easier to setup accurate cuts. We bundle these
accessories with the machine in a package
deal at an attractive
price.
A plunge
bar allows the bit to be plunged with one hand while you
power feed wood with other hand. It is a great convenience
and we
have plunge bars for most popular
routers.
If you have bits with shanks less than 1-1/2" long then you
should consider our Trend collet
extension.
To keep your bits sharp purchase our DMT diamond
hones.
To clamp wood
horizontally for mortising you need a mortise rail. It is easy to build
your own mortise rail, but you may want
to consider
WoodRat's
kit
model or new MR3 aluminum model. The MR3 includes an indexing pin for positioning, plus it is useful for more than mortising.
If you are building chairs or furniture requiring angled
tenons consider our multi-angle
jig. It offers clamping at both single
and compound angles and can also be used as a mortise
rail.
Our laser
guide provides a convenient way to check bit position before making a cut or drilling a dowel hole. The laser is attached to your router,
not the WoodRat. The laser cross hair can be aligned to represent
where the center or edges of bit will enter wood.
For half-blind drawer front dovetails consider our dovetail
skew chisels to square pin corners. To square mortise
corners use our corner
chisel or round the tenon with
our hand
made rasp.
Other Craftsman Gallery accessories that you may want to consider
are quick change router chucks for DeWalt, Porter
Cable and Bosch routers and t-handle
hex wrenches that are more comfortable to
use than standard allen wrenches packaged with your machine.
Our Craftsman Gallery accessories enhance the machine and can
add to your
enjoyment, but you can get a lot done with just
the basic machine. We recommend you start
with our WR5 package
deal plus a router, plunge bar and bits.
