Setup Blocks Are Just What You Need for Precise Machine Setups
This eight-piece set of extra-large anodized aluminum setup blocks works where smaller blocks sometimes fall short. The generous 4" length by 3/4" width of these blocks provides double the surface area of the 3" by 1/2" blocks in our
15 piece set. Plus, the largest block in this set is a handy 4" by 1" by 7/8".
Woodworkers for generations have used Setup Blocks to set up their tools quickly and precisely. Say you need to set a router bit 1/2" from the fence? Just place the 1/2" block between the bit and the fence. You are now ready to make some grooves.
There’s no bending over trying to get a better angle on the ruler while attempting to avoid parallax and shadows. It’s so simple that you could do it with your eyes closed and get the same accuracy.
Accuracy At Your fingertips
Combine the simplicity of these Setup Blocks with a highly accurate tool you already possess: your finger! Specifically, the tip of your finger is very sensitive to touch.
Ever run the tip of your finger across a paper’s edge and notice you can FEEL that paper’s thickness against the tabletop. You’re feeling the height difference of about 0.003".
Let’s say you need to set a router bit to 1/4" above your router table. Place a 1/4" Setup Block next to the router bit and slowly raise or lower the bit until your finger says: “they are even.”
Now you want to set your table saw’s blade to 3/4". Just place the 3/4" Setup Bar next to the blade and raise the blade until you feel them match in height. Plug the saw back in and get to work.
Stop and Go
But what if you want to use your plunge router to make a 3/8" dado. It is quick and simple with Setup Blocks. First, lower the bit until it contacts the wood. Now, raise the depth stop and place a 3/8" Setup Block between the depth stop and the turret. Finally, lock the depth stop, remove the Setup Block, turn the router on, and lower the bit until the depth stop contacts the turret. The bit is now 3/8" into the wood, and you’re good to go.
Take a Measure
This eight-piece Setup Block Set from iGaging provides 11 different measurements without combining blocks:
1/16", 3/32", 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 7/8", 1" & 4"
But how do you get 11 different dimensions out of eight Setup Blocks? Simple, most are 3/4" thick, and ALL the Setup Blocks are 4" long. The 7/8" Setup Bar is 1" thick. All the Setup Blocks are clearly marked, so there’s never a question about what size to grab.
Plus, notice that the 1/16" and the 7/8" Blocks have 1/16" engraved scales across their lengths and heights. So, rather than looking all over the shop for your short ruler, you’ve got what you need when you need it, and it’s already in your hand!
Make a Sandwich
But what if you need 5/16"? No problem, stack the 1/8" on top of the 3/16" — and you’ve got it!
Or stack the 1/16" on top of the 1/4", another way to get to the same place!
But what about 21/32"? Easy, take the 1/16" + 3/32" + 1/2" Setup Blocks and create a Setup Bar Sandwich! How easy can this get?
Since these Setup Blocks have a ±0.001" accuracy, any combination you set up will be accurate.
